How should balustrades for residential areas be designed? PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 February 2013

"I would like to know, how should balustrades for residential areas be designed. The intermediate bars on my balustrades are horizontal to the floor and the building inspector says they should all be vertical. What does the regulation say?"

The National Building Regulations only require vertical bars on swimming pool fencing. There is nothing in the regulations that requires vertical intermediates for balustrades to either stairs, balconies or walkways. If your building inspector insists, then ask him to show the regulation to you as there is nothing stated regarding vertical or horizontal bars. The only requirement is that the gaps must be such that a 100mm diameter ball may not be able to pass through the balustrade at any point.
I hope that this helps.
