Cleaning copper that is tarnished.

Cleaning copper can be very frustrating – it tarnishes quickly – so rather clean it regularly.

Don’t coat copper with clear lacquer – it does make the shine last – but will eventually discolour beneath the lacquer which then has to be removed with thinners.

Rather coat the metal with a clear floor wax, applying sparingly. Allow the wax to harden and then polish with a soft cloth.

Badly tarnished copper can be treated with a cleaning paste made from salt and lemon juice or vinegar.

Use an old toothbrush to clean intricate areas.

Verdigris (green stains) can be removed by wiping with neat ammonia. Remember to rinse your hands afterwards.

Th exterior of copper cooking pots and pans should be cleaned with a solution of vinegar and salt, then rinsed and dried with warm water.
