Recently a reader wrote in with the following question which has come up quite often:-

Please would you be able to tell me if it is current regulation for a door which leads from a garage directly into the house to be a  "fire door"?

I know this was a regulation some years ago, but I just need to know if it is still required by JHB Council and what the regulations state about it.

Les advises as follows:

Thank you for your enquiry.

SABS 0400 TT9.2 states that any door between a garage and a habitable room shall be a solid timber door not less than 40mm thick and with a fire resistance of 1 hour (TT6.2 Table 4)

It will therefore be a requirement of all municipalities.
