One of our readers wrote in with the following question regarding the level of a garage floor when it is integral to the house.
"If you are building a garage onto your home so that you can walk from, for example, your kitchen or lounge into your garage -are there any specifications about the floor level between your garage and kitchen?
Les responds as follows:
There is no regulation that applies to the level of a garage floor relative to that of the main house or any other building. The regulation in SABS 0400 (TT51) only applies to parking garages where the garage floor has to be 10 mm lower.
The only other requirement is that you have to install a 30 min fire-rated door between the garage and the house and there has to be a 230 mm firewall between the garage and the house up to the underside of the roof tiles or sheets.
