If you are building a new house in South Africa, especially now with power outages and load shedding being the order of the day, it makes sense to invest in a house that is sustainable.

The Australian Government has an awesome site with technical manuals you can download and just about every conceivable bit of information you need with regard to building a sustainable house.

Renewable electricity power systems (REPS) use renewable energy sources to produce electricity with very low greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy sources are the sun, wind and water which are continuously replenished from natural sources.

For more information on renewable sources such as:

- Photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity;
- Wind generators or turbines; and
- Micro Hydro Generators

vist the greenhouse.gov.au website.

And, one more thing, be aware that many of the appliances in and around our homes use "standby energy" even when they're not being used. Some of these appliances include televisions, videos, clocks, computers, fax machines, battery chargers - so if they're plugged in and on at the wall - they're using standby electricity.

Turn off all appliances at the wall when you're not using them.
