Answers To Your Building Questions

Pierre has posed the following question on our website.  No email address was provided, so I hope he sees this.
I have a carport that I want to convert into a double garage. One builder told me you are not allowed to keep existing paving, and need to provide a concrete floor. Is this correct? I would rather keep the current paving to save costs.

Les's reply to Pierre follows:

The National Building Regulations do not require that the floor or a garage has to be a concrete slab. Paving is perfectly acceptable.

Compaction of the ground next to the new foundation where the paving is to be re-laid must be properly done to prevent the paving from settling over that area.
